Ronaldo scores as Portugal beat Liechtenstein (1)

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a world record-extending 128th international goal for Portugal as they beat minnows Liechtenstein in Euro 2024 qualifying.

The hosts kept Portugal, who have already booked their place in Germany, at bay in the first half in Vaduz.

But Al-Nassr's Ronaldo, 38, hit the post and then smashed home from Diogo Jota's through ball in the first minute of the second period.

Joao Cancelo curled in their second and Goncalo Ramos had an effort disallowed.

Ronaldo has remained prolific for his country despite leaving Manchester United for the Saudi league, scoring 10 goals for Portugal this year.

Ali Daei's 108 goals for Iran was the previous men's goalscoring world record.

Elsewhere in Group J, Slovakia booked their place at Euro 2024 - in second place behind Portugal - with a 4-2 win over Iceland.

Luxembourg - who will be in next year's play-offs - beat Savo Milosevic's Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1.

Ronaldo scores against another minnow like 99% of his other international goals. Why is he even still getting picked by Portugal? They played so much better at the last WC when they finally decided to drop him and his ego.

No matter what your thoughts are on Ronaldo, 128 goals at international level is a highly impressive stat, which will not be, if ever, beaten for a very long time

He scored against argueably the World's worst International side. It is the Media, yet again, spoon feeding this new generation of Stat Obsessed football fans with the details and thus enhancing the Myth and Aura that Ronaldo is somehow the greatest player to ever grace the game! He isn't, Fitness wise maybe, but the game is littered with better players. Very Talented Spoilt Brat.

Couldn’t agree more. He is the most overhyped, repellant narcissist ever to play the game. He stats are massively inflated by penalties and other goals against absolute minnows. Not even close to being the best ever. He’s not even the best Ronaldo! Messi, Pele, Maradona, CR9…All far superior players than this clown.

Good spirited effort from Liechtenstein considering the heavy losses they have suffered in recent times but Portugal may well have shown some class in taking it easy on them. Ronaldo looks so young for nearly 39 maybe he will play for Portugal in World Cup 2026.

Nothing to shout about for Portugal had over 85% control over the game with 29/5 shots at goal but only scored 2??
This doesn’t bode well for the Escutcheons in the Euros next year when they come up against much stronger opposition. Putting so much reliance on Ronaldo isnt great tactics
